2 Lessons here:
1. Only place pure water in vacuum insulated bottles (especially if you are prone to losing them or forgetting the what the contents are)
2. When I was faced with swelling/bruising/pain, kinesiotape was useful to help reduce all three.
**Note: This is just my example...always check with a health care practitioner prior to performing any activity shown here on your own. Every case is individual and should be evaluated and treated accordingly by the appropriate professional.
The backstory: I had the unfortunate experience of opening a vacuum sealed water bottle that contained a fruit smoothie that had unknowingly fermented after it had been lost for a few days at my daughter's school.
It was a freak accident, but given the circumstances, one that could have easily happened to anyone. I am thankful that I have my eyesight and that this did not happen to my 10 year old daughter.
This video shows how I am using kinesiotape to help in my recovery.
If you want to read what happened, here is my Huffington Post blog post. Please share it to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

While fermentation can occur in any bottle, the unique design of these bottles (manufactured by several different companies...I just mentioned the one I had) with the rigid stainless steel bottle with a lid with a plastic liner makes them vulnerable to becoming dangerous projectile objects. I think these bottles are fine for water, but I wouldn't put any juice or drink that has the potential to ferment inside, in the event it is lost or misplaced.
