How can you interview new massage clients in a way that sets you up for a good therapeutic relationship? Here's how I go about it.
1:30 Establishing rapport
1:51 Demystifying massage
2:10 Reducing the power differential
3:28 How to get good information from clients
5:05 Sitting/standing on the same level
5:28 Introducing yourself and your massage approach
5:56 Asking open-ended questions and follow-up questions
6:20 Mirroring your client's areas of interest
8:05 Giving neutral responses to avoid "leading the witness"
8:32 Explaining undressing, getting informed consent for hip work
9:04 Asking for client communication regarding pressure, personal space, etc
9:30 Why I'm so thorough during the first interview with new massage clients
Tips for Massage Therapists working at a Franchise: https://www.facebook.com/massagesloth...
When I'm interviewing new massage clients, I see it as an opportunity to set the tone for the possibly years-long therapeutic relationship ahead. While I try to give as much of this information as possible to clients beforehand (via my website, Facebook page, videos, etc), I think it's okay to repeat myself and reemphasize the most important points.
Really, even if you forget something or stumble over a line or two (I always do!), the most important thing is to take the time. A 3 minute client intake can be much more impactful than a 30 second check-in. It gives you and your client time to give and receive more information, and it sets you up for having open lines of communication in the future.
Let me know what you think, and what you'd like to see next!
