The popularity of an early installation of colonial furniture and decorative art in 1909 prompted the Metropolitan Museum to begin plans for a separate American Wing, which opened in 1924. The wing was fronted by the classical façade of the Branch Bank of the United States. An expansion in 1980 encased the freestanding building within a glass courtyard and surrounding paintings galleries. One of the goals of the recent renovation of the American Wing was to make the decorative arts galleries within the original structure more accessible. Nicholas Vincent, research assistant, American Decorative Arts, shares some of the highlights of the American furniture collection on display in the newly renovated galleries.
